What a Ceramic Coating Does
The Science of Hydrophobics
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to gelcoat and cures into a hard, hydrophobic layer.
Wax sits on top of the surface and washes off over weeks. A ceramic coating bonds to it and lasts seasons. Practically, that means water sheets off instead of beading and drying into spots, contaminants have a harder time bonding, UV protection lasts substantially longer, and washing gets faster because less sticks in the first place.
Straight Talk:
It is not scratch-proof and it is not permanent. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Apply Coating
Most of the labour and most of the cost is in the prep. The coating itself takes a fraction of the time. That's also why we prefer to do coatings at the shop. Cure time in controlled conditions, out of wind, dust, and direct sun, is the difference between a coating that lasts and one that doesn't.

Is It Worth It?
Making The Right Investment
PROBABLY YES — If:
- You plan to keep the boat for several more years.
- It's moored and takes daily hard water spotting.
- You're already paying for oxidation removal (protecting that work is the cheap part).
- You're tired of doing a full wash after every single outing.
PROBABLY NOT — If:
- You are selling the vessel within a season.
- It lives on a trailer under a cover most of the year.
- You'd rather wax it annually and save the upfront difference in cost.
